1888 թվականին՝ 20 տարի չբոլորած, Մահաթմա Գանդին մեկնում է Լոնդոն, որտեղ 3 տարի սովորում է իրավաբանության ֆակուլտետում և ավարտում։ 1893 թվականին նա աշխատանքի է տեղավորվում Հարավային Աֆրիկայում։ Այնտեղ սկսում է իր և իր տեղացիների պաշտպանության գործընթացը։ Նա մշակում է սկզբունքներ, որոնք հիմնվում են արիության, արդարության ու ոչ բռնության վրա։
